strain during the adjustment process. As well, adapting to a new
culture or emotional situation is difficult and most feel anxious,
discouraged, confused and lonely.

promotes friendships and encouragement to newly arrived live-in caregivers/nannies in Vancouver and their friends.

Household workers are
vulnerable to all forms of abuse, so to protect their wellbeing the Philippine
Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) approved better policies in the
recruitment process. It also sets the new minimum wage for domestic helpers at
USD 400 or more or less Php 20,000.00.
OFWs in
countries which are not at war do not have to dodge bullets or run away from
bombs. But they had to dodge the blows and escape abuse, beatings and
rape by their employers. Adding insult to injury are the stories of neglect,
insensitivity, and abandonment they experience from the government which hails
them as “modern-day heroes” and milks them of every dollar they earn.
PHILIPPINES: Risking lives to save the economy -Deployment of overseas
Filipino workers abroad, even in danger zones, has been the response of the
government to the ballooning unemployment rate and worsening poverty situation.
But despite their valuable contribution in propping up the ailing economy, the
“modern-day heroes” do not get what is due to them. In times of crisis, they
are left to fend for themselves without the assistance of the government that
reaps the benefits of their labor.
